Primary School Disability Awareness Assemblies

Hi! I’m Aideen Blackborough – a disabled trainer and speaker living with Cerebral Palsy. I deliver fun, friendly and engaging disability awareness assemblies for primary schools across the UK. My sessions help children understand what disability means, challenge stereotypes and learn how to be kind, inclusive friends.

What to Expect

My assemblies are designed to be:

Age Appropriate – Using simple language, relatable examples and lots of interaction

Engaging and fun – I use a simple true or false quiz to engage the children and help them challenge common myths about disability in a playful and memorable way

Interactive – Children are encouraged to ask questions and share their thoughts

Educational – Aligned with PSHE and inclusion goals

Topics We Explore

  • What is disability?
  • What is Cerebral Palsy?
  • How do disabled people do everyday things?
  • Why is inclusion important?
  • How can we be kind and respectful to everyone?

Why It Matters

Children are naturally curious and open-minded. However, it’s difficult for them to understand the complexities of disability without guidance. That’s why introducing disability awareness at an early age is so important and by doing so, we help children:

  • Build empathy and understanding
  • Develop inclusive attitudes which help shape a more inclusive future for everyone
  • Feel confident to communicate interact with disabled people
  • Become respectful and supportive peers

Session Details

  • The assemblies can be delivered in person or virtually and they typically last 30-40 minutes
  • Suitable for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 – separate sessions for each group can be delivered
  • Classroom visit can follow on from assemblies to answer more in-depth questions
  • Follow-up teaching resources are available to support further conversations
